Poker Terminology

 
By now you, probably know that there's a lot of money to be made playing poker online. It's completely true. Poker players around the world are making a living by playing cards in the comfort their own homes. Many more are making good money doing the same. The majority of poker players are enjoying Texas Hold'Em. In today's article, I am going to go over some of the initial terms that every poker player should know.

Basic Poker Terminology

Hole Cards: The first two cards dealt to you in Texas Hold'Em.

Rake: A small commission the poker room takes out for their services.

Pot: All the money that's been wagered. The winner(s) win the pot less the rake.

All-In: When a poker player bets all of his or her chips.

River: In Texas Hold'em, this is the fifth and final card dealt to the community. Many fortunes have been won and lost on the river.

Turn: In Texas Hold'em, this is the fourth card dealt to the community.

Flop: The first three cards dealt to the community. All three are shown at once.

Call: To match a bet. For instance, if the current bet was $4, calling it would mean you bet $4 as well.

Raise: To raise a bet. For instance, if the current bet was $2 and you raise, you would first match the $2 and then raise it higher.

Fold: A folding player has given up on the hand. Any money entered into the pot is lost.

Check: To check is to pass your turn.

Blinds: The blinds are basically the players that must ante up. There is the big blind and the small blind.

Bottom Pair: The lowest pair on the board.

Top Pair: The highest pair on the board.

Buy-In: The amount of money required to play in a game of poker. For instance, if a tournament is $5+$1, the buy-in is $6 to play.

Connectors or Suited Connectors: When you have two cards that are only one rank apart, like KQ, you have connectors. If they are the same suit, you have suited connectors.

Limp: Someone that simply calls a bet pre-flop.

Nuts: When you have the best possible hand, you have the nuts.

Overpair: A pair that's larger than anything on the board. For instance, if you have KK and the board is showing Q J 2, you have an overpair.

Rank: The rank is the numerical value of the card.

Under the Gun: The first player to act.

There you have it. Memorize these crucial poker terms and you will be well on your way to better understanding the game of poker. The only thing left to do is stake your claim to the poker riches being amassed in online poker.
